EBT Scams

EBT Scam Alert

There has been an increase in reports of EBT scams and text messages. If you or your participants receive a text message that includes a phone number, do not call it. Counties and State departments will never text or call to request personal information such as EBT card number or personal identification number (PIN). Please visit the California EBT website for more information: California EBT Information.

Sample EBT scam text message:

EBT Scam Sample Text message

In the scam sample above, recipients receive a text message that instructs them to call a number or click on a link. If they call, an automated system prompts them to "register their EBT card" to have access to their benefits. Victims of the scam entered their EBT card number, PIN, and social security number, leaving themselves open to potential identity theft or benefits being stolen.

To report EBT scam telephone calls, text messages, emails, or online phishing:

  • Call the California EBT Customer Service Helpline at 1-877-328-9677 or 1-800-735- 2929 (for Telecommunication Relay Services for the hearing/speech-impaired)
  • Email information related to the scam to CDSSEBT@dss.ca.gov

Other known EBT scams also ask for personal information, card number, and/or PIN by:

  • Offering a free “government cell phone” or free gift cards
  • Posing as a “protection plan” company that is part of the state program
  • Claiming to be “concerned citizens” posting warnings about EBT card security with a telephone number similar to a real customer service helpline telephone number (maybe one number is different)

For the most up-to-date news and announcements on EBT please view CalFresh and EBT News and Updates (lacounty.gov).
