Toy Loan

Toy Loan is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that allows children to borrow toys from a Toy Loan Center in the same way as they would borrow books from a library. The Program is a voluntary community effort cosponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Department of Public Social Services. The Toy Loan Program began in 1935 as a community effort in Westchester, California during the Great Depression to loan toys to children who didn’t have many toy options in their home. There are now over 45 centers located throughout Los Angeles County. Each year, these centers attend to over 30,000 children and serve as a resource for teachers, educators, school psychologists, and County employees to help enhance learning and stimulate communication therapy. Over 80 years after opening the first center, the Program remains unchanged. To continue meeting the Toy Loan mission of building a foundation of lifelong learning through sparking creativity and imagination with the items being loaned; there are still no membership dues and no imposed late fees.

Children learn character-building and citizenship skills by returning the items in good condition and on time.
