DPSS Joins Effort to Promote 2021 Child Tax Credit for Low-Income Families

The Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) is helping to spread awareness about the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) expansion of the 2021 Advance Child Tax Credit (ACTC), which is benefiting low-income families and reducing child poverty in Los Angeles County.

According to the IRS, the ACTC expansion will lift 4.1 million children above the poverty line and reduce child poverty by more than 40 percent.

“This partnership is definitely a home run for the many families who will benefit from the tax credit,” said DPSS Director Antonia Jiménez.

Key Facts:

  • The credit is worth $3,000 per child (ages 5 and under at the end of 2021) and
  • $3,600 per child (ages 6 through 17 at the end of 2021)
  • Families with low or no recent earnings will receive the full credit amount
  • Families will receive $300 a month for each child under age 5 and under and $250 a month for each child ages 6 to 17 years old

Most families in the U.S. will get Advance Child Tax Credit payments automatically, however, some families who are considered “non-filers” will need to confirm their eligibility by using the Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool.

Additional information about the ACTC is available online on the IRS 2021 Advance Child Tax Credit FAQ page.
