Los Angeles County is full of amazing museums, gardens, and destinations. If you receive CalWORKs or CalFresh, you and your kids can visit these places for free.


 

Whatever their interests or ages, there is something for your family inside this brochure! Play in huge parks, explore exhibits, or check out one of LA County’s incredible museums! 

How to visit for free:

  1. Check dates when admission is free and for whom. At some destinations, admission may be free all the time for everybody.
  2. Make sure you bring ID (California ID, military ID, proof you live in LA County, etc.).
  3. If the Golden State Advantage Card (EBT Card) is necessary to get in for free, make sure you bring it, along with a California ID.
  4. Only general admission is provided free of charge. Special exhibits or attractions are not included in this program and may have an extra fee.
  5. Many destinations are closed on holidays. Before visiting, call or visit the website for up-to-date information.

    The museum has vintage fire engines, uniforms, photographs and authentic firefighting equipment. In addition, visitors see and learn how being a firefighter was different during segregation and desegregation.

    AMOCA houses five galleries with a rotating exhibition program that explore current issues, illustrate specific ceramic techniques, and/or showcase objects of historical significance. Ageappropriate tours, lectures, family days, and other education and outreach programs complement the exhibitions, and adjacent to the exhibition halls is a 12,000 square-foot ceramics studio, one of the largest in California, offering a range of classes in wheel throwing, hand building, and advanced techniques, along with multi-day workshops led by acclaimed ceramists

    The Annenberg Space for Photography features several powerfully-themed exhibits a year as well as photography-oriented programming, including lectures, workshops, master classes and family-friendly events.

    Craft Contemporary is special because it is a place to both see art and make art. Tying into exhibitions, Craft Contemporary coordinates a robust roster of hands-on workshops led by professional artists and instructors. The museum is a place where friends and families come to spark creativity and appreciate more fully what it means to craft something by hand.

    FIDM Museum has one of the nation’s finest fashion collections of more than 15,000 objects, dating from the 18th century to the present. Annually, the museum hosts the movie industry by presenting its highly anticipated exhibition, The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design, which salutes the work of motion picture

    The Japanese American National Museum is located in downtown LA’s Little Tokyo Historic District. It explores America’s ethnic and cultural diversity by sharing the story of Japanese Americans through its ongoing exhibitions and public programs.

    The Hammer Museum is part of the School of the Arts and Architecture at UCLA, and offers exhibitions and collections that span classic to contemporary art. Hammer exhibitions highlight contemporary art since the 1960s, especially the work of emerging and under recognized artists. The exhibitions, permanent collections, and nearly 300 public programs annually —including film screenings, lectures, symposia, readings, music performances, and workshops for families—are all free to the public.

    Serving over 378,000 guests each year, Kidspace is a unique children’s museum that features more than 40 hands-on exhibits, programs, and monthly events on almost 3.5 acres of indoor and outdoor space. Kidspace encourages a child’s growth and development through explorations of natural environments, investigations in science, and artistic forms of expression that captivate the inquisitive and growing minds of children ages 1 to 10.

    The La Brea Tar Pits is the only active and urban Ice Avge excavation site in the world. Outside, visitors can watch as the remains of plants and animals living over the last 50,000 years are unearthed in real time. Inside the museum, scientists and volunteers clean, repair, and identify the fossils discovered just yards away. The best specimens are displayed and available for research: extraordinary saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, dire wolves, mammoths, and mastodons.

    This Los Angeles County museum and Smithsonian Institute affiliate celebrates the past and inspires the future by sharing the untold stories about the history, art, and culture of Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and all Latinos in the founding and continuing evolution of Southern California through compelling and culturally enriching exhibitions, educational initiatives, and public programs.     The Long Beach Museum of Art is a community-based organization that collects and cares for a permanent art collection, presents changing exhibitions in a variety of media, and provides engaging educational programming for youth and adults.

    LACMA is one of the best museums in the western United States. It features the finest art from ancient times to the present. It offers year-round programs from everyone in the family plus artist-led workshops nearly every Sunday at Andell Family Sundays.

    Founded by local Holocaust survivors in 1961, Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust moved to its award-winning architectural building in Pan Pacific Park near The Grove and Farmers Market in 2010. Today the Museum carries on the mission of the founding survivors to commemorate those who perished, educate future generations about the Holocaust, and inspire a more respectful, dignified and humane world. The Museum houses the West Coast’s largest archive of Holocaust-era artifacts and offers complimentary audio guides, docent-led tours and Holocaust survivor talks.

    The Museum of Tolerance promotes understanding and respect for all by examining prejudice, discrimination and global human rights issues through powerful multimedia exhibits.     The 87-acre Garden was created in 1960 and is the first botanic garden in the United States build atop a landfill.     A Hollywood legend. A cowboy. William S. Hart may have starred in 1920s silent films, but his lifestyle was anything but quiet—exemplified by his eclectic 22-room mansion and ranch on a 166-acre park. At the William S. Hart Museum, visitors are invited to step into Hart’s wild, wonderful world, exploring his home and belongings (dog bedroom included), greeting a herd of wild bison donated by Walt Disney, or hiking through the wildflowers of Hart Park.
