Family Maintenance

Family Maintenance

The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Family Maintenance (FM) cases, with or without court involvement, require various support services for families in order to maintain their child(ren) safely in the home. Family Preservation (FP) cases are a subset of this category.  They are already being coordinated with both Departments and the DCFS contracted FP service providers in accordance with the current Linkages FP protocol.

To receive DCFS FM services, the family must be willing to accept them and participate in corrective efforts to ensure that the child's protective needs are met. There is a six-month time limit for this service.

FM families served will achieve the following benefits:

  • Case planning can consider multiple demands, timeframes and expectations that families involved in both systems are required to meet.
  • Early involvement of the family in the case coordination process, increases likelihood of the family successfully achieving their case goals.
  • Streamlining case plans, services, goals and timelines, makes more efficient use of time, efforts and resources.
  • Avoid court continuances due to case plan miscommunication.
  • Enhance access to services for domestic violence, mental health, substance abuse, and other barriers to family stability, self-sufficiency and child safety.
  • Eliminate contradictory and overwhelming expectation of parents from workers from both Departments.
  • Enhance protective factors for the family through increasing employment-related capabilities and potential income.
