DPSS Director, Sheryl L. Spiller's Message

"Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) has opened an unprecedented window of opportunity to affordable health coverage for millions of uninsured and under-insured individuals.  Health Care Reform has expanded the number of people we serve, and change the way we do business.

The nation is watching Los Angeles County as we will play a critical role in ensuring that thousands of residents are enrolled in the health care system.  Our responsibility will no longer be simply to determine if a person is eligible for Medi-Cal, but also to decide which health care plan or coverage the participant is eligible for.

On October 1, 2013, DPSS Intake and Customer Service Center Workers began assisting with open enrollment for thousands of newly eligible participants, whose coverage will be effective January 2014."

Sheryl L. Spiller,
Director of DPSS

Health Care Reform

The new law requires health plans and insurers to provide health insurance access to individuals, regardless of their health status, age or occupation; it requires individuals to purchase and maintain insurance coverage for themselves and their families; it requires government to set the rules for the insurance marketplace and to support access to affordable coverage for our lower income residents; and, it requires individuals, families and communities to assume more responsibility to manage their health and be more involved in health care decisions.  Find out how to apply.
