Translation Services Unit
LADPSS recognizes its obligation to communicate effectively with non-English speaking and Limited English Proficient (LEP) applicants and participants. Therefore, the Translation Services Unit assists the Department in translating forms, notices, and other documents in all LADPSS threshold languages. This includes, but is not limited to, translating forms previously translated by the State and Federal government, but modified by LADPSS.
The Translation Services Unit has two in-house translators for each non-English LADPSS threshold language. Currently, there are nine languages identified as LADPSS threshold languages: Armenian, Cambodian, Chinese, English, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. The caseloads for these languages are equal or exceed five percent of the total caseloads for each program or location.
In addition to translating the forms, the in-house translators also review the translation works of other in-house or contracted translators, in their respective languages to ensure accuracy in a linguistically sensitive and timely manner.
As of July 2013, the Translation Services Unit also assists the Department with calls from applicants and participants through Customer Service.
