The name for California's Food Stamp Program has changed as a result of recent State law. The new name for the program is "CalFresh". The name change will not change your benefits. The amount of CalFresh (formerly known as food stamp) benefits you receive will not be different because of the name change.

CalFresh was established to improve the nutrition of people in low-income households.  It does that by increasing their food-buying power, so they are able to purchase the amount of food their household needs.  CalFresh benefits are used instead of money at the grocery store.

CalFresh benefits are issued via a Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card.

CALFRESH SINGLE-DAY BENEFIT ISSUANCE

To ensure that the County of Los Angeles’ most vulnerable residents, from low-income households, including seniors, people with disabilities, and children, receive critical CalFresh supplemental nutrition benefits without interruption in the month of March, the Department of Public Social Services has been authorized to issue the March CalFresh benefit to eligible households on March 1, 2019.

These are not additional benefits, but an early issuance of the March CalFresh benefit.  There will be no additional benefits issued in the month of March; therefore, households are urged to budget their benefit accordingly to ensure that they have funds available to purchase food in the month of March.

DPSS customers are urged to maximize their CalFresh benefit by taking advantage of the California Market Match program that provides a $10 voucher match when they spend $10 CalFresh benefits at local participating farmers’ markets.  CalFresh customers are encouraged to visit https://ecologycenter.org/fmfinder/ and enter their address to find a local participating farmers’ market.

CalFresh customers may also contact 211 L.A. County, the central source for information and referrals for all health and human services in LA County, by simply dialing 2-1-1.

Please note: 

Households with a Semi-Annual Report (SAR 7) or annual recertification due in the month of February must submit their report with required verifications or complete the recertification process to receive their March CalFresh benefits. ALERT!!! Social Media, Telephone and Cell Phone Text Scam!

EBT cardholders continue to receive text messages and/or phone calls from number(s) listed in column 2 below instructing them to call the numbers listed in column 3 below where an automated recording asks them to provide personal information including their EBT 16-digit card number and PIN. When the information is given, the perpetrators then create a card and withdraw funds from the recipient’s accounts. This is a scam. Cardholders should not provide any information. Cardholders who have already provided card numbers and PINs to a third party should call the phone on back of their EBT card and change their PINs or to report their EBT cards as lost or stolen.

Client reported receiving a call from an individual identifying herself as from the Medi-Cal Department. The caller had the full SSN numbers and full CIN numbers for the client and her daughter. The caller asked for verification of identification information during card replacement activation. Multiple further attempted calls occurred.

** Although this is Medi-Cal related, a similar incident could target EBT clients.
